Research Group Education and Digital Transformation

The research group on «Education and Digital Transformation» is being established in 2020. It will contribute to the joint research activities of the PH Zurich, the University of Zurich, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), as part of the digitisation initiative of the Zurich universities (DIZH).

Digital transformation continues to affect all areas of life and poses new challenges to science, society, and the education system. The Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) is set to increase its contribution to research into digital transformation in an educational context and is establishing a research group on «Education and Digital Transformation» in 2020. The group's work will focus on the question of how digital transformation affects education, teaching and learning, and on how digital developments can be shaped in an educational context. These questions will be addressed in the following three areas of research:

Education and Digital Society

Digitalisation is changing social structures so fundamentally that there is increasing talk of a «digital society». The research group will examine which structural changes in the education system go hand in hand with digital transformation. One focus is on how educational institutions are facing the new opportunities and challenges. Another aim is to investigate how digital transformation is affecting societal contexts and, for example, the relevance of education in society, educational opportunities, or the role of teachers.

Digital Learning and Teaching

Digital transformation requires and enables new subject-specific didactic approaches in schools, universities and adult education. The research group will examine the possibilities of new learning environments and their effects on didactic settings. This includes, for example, questions about dealing with digital media in teaching and learning processes, teaching pedagogical media skills in training and further education, and the use of artificial intelligence to promote learning processes.

Computing Skills and School

The focus of this research is on how IT skills are imparted in lessons and the question of their importance in educational institutions. This will address central questions such as how digital expertise is acquired at school, in adult education and in university teaching, which specific skills are required in the classroom, and how they can be promoted through computer applications.
